Lay for the Day
14th March

Albert Einstein was born on this day in 1879 in Ulm, Germany.

Unseen Light

Beyond a sphere of mist
and crystals, of milling weather
green things have exhaled
for us, huddled together,
we conceive of space, discounting a grist
of dust, as emptiness unassailed.

Yet from their seething springs,
all ways and at a single pace,
the unseen rays race
out and cross without a trace,
unstrayed and unslowing unless they fly
where the wavelengths interlock as things

or in at the tomb of our eyes
to die,
becoming there the light we recognise.

John Gibbens
from Makings ’89–’91
