Lay for the Day
17th September

1883: the American poet William Carlos Williams is born in Rutherford, New Jersey.

A glittering day of the favourite season,
the short sun unblinking in the hazy air
on the town as ever hectic
and disco-ordinate, making its motion
serene and equal-seeming, almost still.
The mother with her child on either side
walks in a wreath of breath under peaceful sky.
