Lay for the Day
5th November

Bonfire Night in Britain, commemorating the arrest of Guy Fawkes in 1605 and the foiling of a plot to blow up the King and Parliament which, had it succeeded, would probably have resulted in bloody civil war. Seen in its best light, it's a festival for the subject of this song.

Democracy [see it on YouTube]

There’s energy oppressed
Howling in the night,
Spoiling for a fight.
Give us the voice of the dispossessed,
Crying out for rights,
Calling for more light.
Blessed are the meek and blessed
Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.

True, true, true
Democracy
Is the queen of hearts,
Not hypocrisy
Nor blutocracy,
Daylight robbery,
Secrecy nor trickery.
All the people
Taking all the parts,
True, wise, brave and free
Democracy.

Let the people choose,
Oh let the people choose…

No repression,
No conniving,
No distortion,
No self-serving.
All the people
Taking all the parts,
True, wise, brave and free
Democracy.

Let the people choose,
Oh let the people choose…
