5Underground Rider
©2002 Gibbens/Weston

I ride the Piccadilly, I ride the Central,
I ride the Northern from Morden to Finchley.
I’ve been an Underground rider,
I’ve been far and wide.
I’ve been a straphanger,
I’ve put my feet up
Twenty fathoms under old London,
Twenty fathoms under the ground.

I’ve been a last-train where-am-I? boozer,
I’ve been a half-five crossword peruser.
I’ve been a Standard reader,
I’ve even given up my seat.
I’ve been a typist,
I’ve been a tourist,
I’ve been an Underground rider.

I’ve had a bad day, now my mind is empty.
I made a killing and I’m reading the FT.
Listen to the Walkmans hissing.
The guy in the bowtie’s pished.
I’ve read the stars
And I’ve read Jeffrey Archer
Twenty fathoms under old London,
Twenty fathoms under the town.

I ride the Piccadilly, District and Circle,
I ride the Northern from Edgware to Stockwell.
I’ve been an Underground rider,
I’ve been there and back.
I’ve been a sardine,
I’ve been a nuisance,
I’ve been an Underground rider.

Obstructing the doors
Causes delay
And can be dangerous.
Mind the Gap.
